With start-up money from NBC Universal, Fox, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Disney, the Producers Guild of America has debuted it’s new database of green vendors. Every facet of the entertainment industry will be able to search the database to find a supplier for their specific needs. Currently they have over 1,100 vendors available. To become a supplier for this guide you need to have at least 2 entertainment industry references and the selection process takes at least a week.
Hollywood has been criticized for having so many of it’s stars speak about environmental issues while production companies pay off very large energy bills due to many blazing lights and high tech cameras. Sometimes production sets are torn down and thrown away without considering if all or parts of the sets could be reused.
Along with a searchable vendor database, entertainment industry companies and individuals can check their “carbon footprint.” Companies can calculate their use of fuel, heating, electricity, travel/accommodations and view their current carbon emissions rate.
A “Best Practices” page gives helpful hints and suggests new ways to recycle sets, finding makeup not tested on animals, using locally grown food sources for production set catering and buying in bulk, etc.
Sounds like a commons sense and cost control campaign that really should’ve been implemented years ago. The higher their costs, the more the public has to pay for tickets.
Here’s the Green Production Guide.
If you’re a vendor/supplier to the entertainment industry you can apply to be included in Vendor Database.
