Hollywood Sign to Shout Solar Energy to the World

On Earth Day 2009, a group of five people met at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood to talk with the 10 members of the Hollywood Sign Trust about adding solar panels to the famous 450-foot long landmark on the slopes above Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles, California.

The intent is to make the Hollywood sign emblematic of solar energy – an announcement to the world from the U.S.A. (and California) that we are not to be left out of the race to a clean, green energy future.

Group leader Mike Bonifer calls the movement “a powerful allegory of the promises we must keep to our children, and the challenges we must meet in order to keep them.”

It is literally an all-star cast, enhanced by the presence and support of Deep Patel, the founder and CEO of GoGreenSolar, a solar advocacy group, green energy internet retailer and online community that debuted at the 2009 Twiistup technology event in Santa Monica.

The proposal garnered support from such notables as radio legend Pat ‘Paraquat’ Kelley; Brian Sirgutz, the CEO of CauseCast; KevinWall, the founder of Live Earth; Terry Nunn of the rock group Berlin; Brooke Gardner Fedro of Andre Agassi’s foundation; T. H. Culhane of Solar CITIES; and Maria Menounos of Access Hollywood.

Now, rumor has it that the committee is just beginning to survey the area around the sign as part of an ongoing feasibility study to make the dream a reality. And what a reality that would be: 450 feet of solar photovoltaic panels assembled in groups 45 feet high and visible across the whole of the Los Angeles valley – a location that is, through movies and celebrity culture, center stage to the entire world!
