“The Microgrid Control Lab provides unprecedented access to a modern grid control center that enables some of the country’s brightest young minds to collaborate, learn and help reinvent the energy grid of tomorrow,” said said Jim Walsh, Managing Director of GE Digital’s Grid Software. Business. “As renewable energy sources, like solar power, continue to develop and evolve, the technology behind the grid must keep pace. It is essential that electrical and computer engineering talents have first-hand experiences with the hardware and software that underpin the modern grid helping utilities safely deliver clean and reliable power.
At today’s lab opening ceremony, leaders from the three organizations participated in a panel discussion focused on the engineering roles available to recent graduates in the energy sector and discussed opportunities full-time employment. FPL and GE Digital together have around 400 UCF alumni in their workforce.
GE Digital also announced today a new internship program that invests in the development of its team and future leaders in network engineering. The program will provide UCF students with intensive experience in the utilities and energy sectors and help students develop analytical and software development skills using emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and technology. machine learning.
Currently, more than 1,400 undergraduate and graduate students at UCF study electrical or computer engineering – disciplines that support energy systems and power grids. More than 500 other UCF students have indicated that they plan to pursue a major in electrical or computer engineering after the prerequisite courses are completed.
The College of Engineering and Computer Science at UCF offers an energy and renewable energy track as part of its undergraduate programs. Additionally, a graduate certificate is offered in Sustainable and Resilient Energy Systems. Through a faculty collaboration called RISES – Resilient, Smart and Sustainable Energy Systems – UCF researchers across multiple disciplines are working to develop sustainable and resilient energy systems and storage.
“This new facility is exactly the type of strategic partnership that makes UCF a top choice for students with future-oriented career goals. GE Digital and FPL have been both philanthropic investors and design collaborators in this lab, ensuring that our students in this field will be industry-ready from day one of their careers, ”said the president of the UCF, Alexander Cartwright. “It’s a win-win. Our students receive cutting-edge training in a lab environment, and both companies open up a pipeline of incredible talent for their workforce.
UCF’s lab is designed to simulate the control center of a micro-grid, a type of self-contained energy system that integrates solar or other renewable energy sources and battery storage for power a small-scale area, independent of a large-scale network.
“We are delighted to offer this innovative research space to engineering students at UCF,” said Ed De Varona, vice president of transmission and substation at FPL. “The lab is a great training ground for budding engineers to work directly with the latest technology and to help refine and innovate the way energy is transmitted and distributed over the grid, today and in the future.
The laboratory aims for the safe, reliable, efficient and secure operation of large-scale distribution networks with extremely high penetration of renewable energies, a growing field in the energy industry. By collaborating with industry and utility partners, UCF continues to provide students with real opportunities as they prepare to embark on careers that shape the future.
