The multimillion rand Alex Palliative Care and Rehabilitation Center is heading to the finish line with 95% of construction completed.

The ultramodern and state-of-the-art hospice with 48 beds and 12 wards is beginning to brighten the horizon and change the landscape of the township as well as the state of health of the region.

Located at the corner of Lenin Drive in Far East Bank, the facility will include a fragile health care department and consultation rooms for doctors, physiotherapists and psychologists, as well as a dining and recreation room, nearing completion.

There is a garden and a memorial wall for patients and visitors to sit and share stories. There are also 16 dedicated parking spaces and a landing stage, a guard post and a barrier for access control.

A small vegetable garden has been set up on the roof. For water supply, there is a water tank tower for portable water and fire water. The facility also has a back-up generator and 114 solar panels to ensure a stable and reliable energy supply to perform essential services. This modern building has a retaining wall, site reticulation and steel reinforced concrete foundation for added strength.

There was an urgent need for the hospice to serve an estimated population of 900,000 residents. The current one operates from a deteriorating old school building that needs attention.
