Black Hills Energy warns customers to be wary of solar companies claiming utility affiliation

Black Hills Energy has received numerous reports from customers of solar companies fraudulently presenting themselves as subsidiaries of Black Hills Energy.

According to reports, sellers are attempting to sell home solar power systems with sellers misleadingly claiming to be associated with Black Hills Energy and claiming to be associated with solar panel installation and discounts. Black Hills Energy is not affiliated with Cheyenne Solar Systems or any partnership.

Additionally, as a precautionary measure, Black Hills Wyoming vice president of operations Mark Stege said, “When a customer wants to install renewable energy systems such as wind and solar, they need to first contact Black Hills Energy to verify the interconnection requirements to our system and also verify that the seller selling the product is a reputable company through the Better Business Bureau.

If you suspect fraud, contact local law enforcement immediately. If you have any concerns or questions, call Black Hills Energy at 888-890-5554.

Additional Tips:

  • To check if an employee has been dispatched to your location, call your utility using the number on your bill or on the company website. Black Hills Energy employees wear shirts with the Black Hills Energy logo, carry company-issued photo ID, and drive vehicles bearing the logo. Employees will be happy to wait outside while you call the company to verify their identity.
  • Do not provide your Social Security number, credit card numbers, or bank account information to anyone during an unannounced visit or unsolicited phone call.
