Off-the-grid living is redefined at this coastal Hawaiian “art farm,” whose corrugated iron structure features bright colors, sharp angles, and volcano views.
The contemporary Maui island property – on sale for $3.995 million with Island Sotheby’s International Realty – was built in 2018 on an elevated site in the community of Haiku, overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Haleakala Volcano. It contains a lot of fun equipment and offers an eco-responsible and autonomous lifestyle, powered by solar panels.

Haiku Farm treads lightly on its 16-acre lot, with buildings on stilts and roofs optimized for rainwater harvesting. Inside the main house there is a colorful industrial aesthetic, offset by neutral wooden walls and a high inverted sloped ceiling. Yellow steel beams frame the dining area, vertical rolling doors connect the rooms, and a multi-pane glazed wall captures the ocean view.
A plethora of glass captures Maui’s natural beauty throughout the resort’s volumes, including a steel Quonset cabin building, houses an artist’s studio and studio, and an outdoor kitchen and lounge area, with a turquoise hearth. Front-opening hatches in the independent wellness studio (with an infrared sauna) provide natural ventilation.
Mirroring the island property’s corrugated iron cladding is a 40-foot-long shipping container pool with a perspex panel, offering views of the water from the living room below.
